Happy Hour Times Around the World

"Happy hour" starts at a different moment in every country β€” and thanks to time zones, one of them is always happening right now. Here's when the drinks-and-a-deal window typically opens around the world.

In the United States, "happy hour" usually means a fixed window of discounted drinks β€” classically 4 to 7 PM on weekdays. Elsewhere, it's less about the discount and more about the ritual: the culturally understood moment when the workday ends and the first drink of the evening is poured. The table below shows the typical window in each place. (Customs vary widely by city and venue β€” treat these as general patterns, not rules.)

Where happy hour is restricted β€” or banned

Not everywhere allows discounted-drink promotions. Ireland prohibits traditional happy-hour pricing (selling alcohol at a reduced price for a limited part of the day). In the United States, a handful of states restrict or ban timed drink specials β€” Massachusetts has outlawed happy hour since the 1980s, and others have their own limits. The underlying drink-o'clock ritual continues everywhere; it just isn't always tied to a discount.
