You can make iOS swap your wallpaper every hour on its own — no tapping required. You'll create 24 quick automations, one for each hour of the day.

Open the Shortcuts app and tap the Automation tab at the bottom.

Tap + → New Automation → Time of Day. Set the time to 12:00 AM, leave it on Daily, switch to Run Immediately, and make sure Notify When Run is off. Tap Next.

You'll see your shortcuts list — tap It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere. The automation is created and you're brought right back to add another.

Repeat steps 2–3 for each hour: 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM… all the way through 11:00 PM. Each one takes about 15 seconds once you know the flow.

Tip: Once you've done two or three, the flow becomes automatic and goes very fast. Most people finish all 24 in under 5 minutes.

Android has no built-in shortcut, but the free MacroDroid app does the same job — and it's more reliable, since Android doesn't kill background tasks the way iPhones do.

⚡ How to set it up — step by step ▼

You'll build one "macro" that downloads a fresh wallpaper and sets it on your lock screen, on whatever schedule you choose.

Install MacroDroid (free) from the link above and open it. Allow the permissions it requests.

Tap Add Macro, then add a Trigger → Day/Time (or Regular Interval). Pick how often to refresh — e.g. every hour.

Add an Action → HTTP Request (GET). URL: https://5-oclock-somewhere.com/wallpaper/current.png — and set it to save the response to a file.

Add another Action → Set Wallpaper. Point it at the file from step 3 and set the target to Lock Screen. Make sure HTTP Request runs first.

Save the macro and toggle it on. Long-press it and choose Test — your lock screen should update within a couple of seconds.

If updates stop: some phones (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus) pause background apps. Set MacroDroid's battery usage to Unrestricted in Settings → Apps → MacroDroid → Battery.
